Life in Italy: sure ain’t no Virgin Active.

I was informed before arriving in Italy that the workout culture here is very different… understatement.

So I need to keep healthy, as I love to eat and and drink Italian wines, and if I don’t, I will need to buy a second seat on the flight back to SA. So I asked Jackie’s niece about the gym she goes to. It is considered one of the better gym’s in Ravenna and certainly has 1 of everything that I need, and I do mean one!

The picture on the left is exactly one half of the New City Gym that I joined on Tuesday. The other quirk that is so NOT Virgin Active, is that here a personal trainer is the guy who sits in the front and manages the door. He comes over to you as you move onto each new exercise, and tells you what to do and sets the weight, then goes back to the desk.

The amusing thing to me, as a gym slacker, is that people do the full exercise he sets them. I would totally cheat!

As you go down the passage, you enter the lifting area, again, the picture on the right shows you the whole area, beyond the boxing bag is the free weight area. This is, without exaggeration, the whole gym. This is, as the title suggested, anything but the expanse we are used to in SA at Virgin Active.

But let me not seem disgruntled or ungrateful. This wonderful gym is everything that I need, and is staffed by very friendly knowledgable people.

I will be spending my mornings here on most days. But never fear, it won’t be too early, as in Italy people don’t do mornings! The gym only opens at 8:45am everyday, so I can casually wake up and get there as they open the doors.

Ciao.
